Double Chin Liposuction Surgery

Having a double chin is a common problem and it can show irrespective of body weight. In many persons, excess fat and sagging skin around the chin persists even after they have lost weight. People who are unable to eliminate their double chin through weight loss can opt for fat removal from chin area by Submental (under the chin) Liposuction.

Q: Who are the ideal candidates for Liposuction for 'Double chin'?

A: Ideal candidates for Chin liposuction as a primary procedure are the people who have visible fat deposition & early signs of aging in the neck. Persons with a localized fat deposition that is out of proportion to the rest of their body will benefit most from localized fat removal. Good candidates have good skin elasticity and tone while in redundant and inelastic or thicker skin types, skin generally does not redrape as favorably after neck liposuction. Once the fat is removed, the skin contracts over the lost volume permitting improved skin redraping across the anterior neck. Inappropriate candidates for chin liposuction are those with moderate-to-severe skin laxity and excess wrinkling, significant sagging of muscles, prominent neckbands and very prominent jowls.

Q: How is the submental liposuction for double chin performed?

A: Submental liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia or intravenous sedation. A 5- to 8-mm incision in the submental crease is made and a 3-mm cannula is introduced into the area. The cannula is then moved back and forth with another hand of surgeon guiding the tip of the cannula, directing fat into the lumen. This is continued until sufficient amount of fat is removed leaving only a thin layer of adipose tissue between two opposing skin layers. Leaving a thin layer of subcutaneous fat is required to achieve a supple skin contour. The submental crease incision is closed using a thin suture.

Q: How is the recovery in the postoperative period?

A: The process of lipolysis induced by liposuction and contraction of the overlying skin continues over the ensuing months. During the postoperative period, patients should wear compressive support for the neck for 2-3 weeks to promote healing and re-contouring in the submental region. Pain is minimal with no dietary restrictions needed. Sleeping with the head end elevated will promote lymphatic drainage and help with postoperative swelling. Most patients return to work within 1 week. Improvement of residual cervical skin wrinkling/ laxity after neck liposuction continues to occur over the following 3 to 6 months. During this time, skin contraction and remodeling of subcutaneous fibrosis will occur.

Facial liposuction is used as a stand-alone rejuvenation procedure or in combination with other facial aesthetic operations like facelifts, neck lift. Submental liposuction offers many advantages like minimum scarring, less tissue trauma, a shorter recovery period, and the ability to hide the scar.
