Chin augmentation is achieved with surgical implants by altering the underlying structure of the face and providing better balance to the facial features.
This operation can be combined with Rhinoplasty to balance the facial proportions. Chin implants are made in different shapes and sizes. They are made out solid (e.g. Silicone) or semisolid (Polyethylene MEDPORE).
Commonly, an incision is made either inside the lower lip or under the chin. A pre-selected implant of the desired size and shape is then placed inside the chin.
If the incision is inside the mouth, it is closed with absorbable sutures. If the incision is in the skin under the chin, absorbable Subcuticular stitches are used. The procedure generally takes between 45 and 60 minutes.
Some swelling and bruising occurs after surgery and a Chin strap after surgery can minimize the swelling and bruising. Pain and discomfort can be controlled by an oral analgesic.
For initial few weeks, facial movements like talking and smiling may be difficult following the surgery.
